Shadows swirled around her body as she stood among them, back straight and power glowing in her eyes. Her gaze connected with mine, and a shiver wracked my body at the smirk twisting her lips.

She stepped forward out of the shadows, and my body tensed.

A  blue sash was draped around her neck. If she graduated with top honors, why was she back home? The magic required to use the teleportation spell this distance could be crippling.

“Nick.” My name on her lips was a poison I couldn’t escape. “You didn’t come to my graduation.”

My heart pounded in my chest, and I fought the urge to turn away, to run. Experience told me it would only make things worse.

She loved the hunt.

“No invitation,” I lied, my mouth dry.

Her eyes narrowed, emphasizing the faint shadows beneath them. “I sent it to your doorstep three weeks ago.”

“I moved recently. You probably sent it to my old address.” Another lie. I’d moved as soon as I saw her handwriting.

Her glare softened, a flickering of hurt catching me off guard. Stepping closer, she sagged against my chest, her breath hot on my neck.

“At least take me to dinner?”

My gut clenched, but I couldn’t ignore how her fingers shook as they clutched my shirt.

I could never say no to her.

My arms wrapped around her, pressing her to me as I offered my neck.

“Thank you,” she whispered, then sank her fangs into me.
